Research interests

I am interested in superstring theory and Quantum field theory. In particular, I focus on gauge theory/string theory correspondence and applications to particle physics and cosmology, AdS/CFT and generalizations, conformal symmetry, renormalization, supergravity, statistical mechanics.

Together with my group we look at new relations between string theory and elementary particle physics, in view of bringing string theory closer to experimental tests. A particularly interesting avenue in this direction are gauge/gravity dualities in generalization of the AdS/CFT correspondence, which allow to map strong-coupling problems in quantum field theory to weakly coupled problems in classical gravity.

An important result which I obtained with members of my research group together with Nick Evans of the University of Southampton is the first gravity dual description of chiral symmetry breaking by a quark condensate. This result, which also involved the associated Goldstone boson, was obtained by embedding a D7 brane in a suitable ten-dimensional gravity background.

In 2007 with Jeong-Hyuck Park and Rene Meyer I have obtained a new matrix model in a time-dependent background which models the very early universe just after the big bang. This model describes how the originally strongly fluctuating geometry expected to be present near the big bang turns into a smooth geometry such as the one we observe today. This result has appeared in Physical Review Letters.
